Highway Maintenance Conference

 

Since 2017, the Michigan Highway Maintenance Conference (HMC) has been providing maintenance training for operators, mechanics, and other front-line workers, as well as foremen, supervisors, and superintendents. Sessions cover training-related topics ranging from safety, regulations, and requirements, to repairs and methods. An optional pre-conference workshop provides attendees with a hands-on experience of maintenance- and safety-related tools and techniques. The Michigan HMC is a conference of the Center for Technology & Training (CTT). It is hosted each year by the CTT, home of Michigan's Local Technical Assistance Program. REGISTRATION FOR HMC

Join us for the annual Michigan Highway Maintenance Conference (HMC)! The conference addresses maintenance training and information about safety, construction, repair, and regulations. Preceding the conference is a pre-conference workshop. Registration for the 2022 HMC will open in February/March 2022.

The event flyer (available when registration opens) will list presentations, speakers, and location details for HMC.

The registration fee includes:

  • Access to all technical sessions for the event selected (on-site or virtual)
  • Event handouts and other materials (hard copy or digital depending on participation mode)
  • Food and refreshments for meals and breaks listed in the agenda for that day (if applicable; depending on participation mode)

You must register separately for the Highway Maintenance Conference and the HMC Pre-conference Workshop. For on-site participation, registration does not include accommodations although the event flyer will contain details on accommodations that are available for participants; also, please notify us in advance if you have special dietary needs. NOTE: Michigan Tech reserves the right to use any pictures taken during this event for advertising and/or instructional purposes.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY: No-shows and cancellations within three business days prior to the workshop or conference will be charged the full registration fee. Substitutions will be accepted.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The Highway Maintenance Conference counts for instructional hours of continuing education for professional engineers. The HMC Pre-conference Workshop​ also counts for instructional hours of continuing education for professional engineers. The number of instructional hours will be noted in the event's flyer. The CTT’s continuing education policy is available at ctt.mtu.edu/continuingeducation.

Preceding the Highway Maintenance Conference is an HMC Pre-conference Workshop. The HMC Pre-conference Workshop covers various principles and characteristics of unpaved road design; importance of drainage; multiple road blading techniques and when they should be used; material applications; how different types of equipment and attachments can be beneficial in road maintenance operations; and how the motor grader, operator, and training itself are crucial parts of this for preserving, maintaining and increasing the safety of our roadways.

Preceding the Highway Maintenance Conference is an HMC Pre-conference Workshop. The HMC Pre-conference Workshop covers implementation of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for short-duration, mobile, and flagged operations, including daily lane closures. It emphasizes the use of standard operating procedures for implementation and focuses on common strategies to improve operational safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.

Each year, we try to provide you with the most innovative and timely topics related to technology, training, and technical assistance. If you are presenting for us during this year's presentation, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Create an outline for your presentation. Make sure you have a clear central idea and three to four audience take-aways. This will help you create a presentation that is easy for your audience to follow.
  • Keep points simple and succinct. You're an expert, but there are many people in the audience that are new to this information.
  • Use large type, standard fonts, and strong contrast on your slides. This will guarantee that your audience will see what's most important.
  • Use simplified charts and graphs instead of tables. The finer details work best for printable charts, graphs, and tables. When you omit these details from your slides, don't worry: you can still talk about them if you feel that some of those details were helpful for context.
  • Use images where possible. And, remember: any words on your slide should not be repeating the words you are saying; otherwise, you and your slides will be redundant.
  • Use video only if it is the best or only way to communicate your point. Be sure to clip videos to the most salient sections. Your audience is there to hear you!
